Soccer | Soledad Aztecs claim wins

SOLEDAD — Soledad High boys and girls soccer teams began the season on a winning note, as the girls team started with a 9-0 victory over the visiting Notre Dame Spirits and the boys team defeated the Palma Chieftains by a 6-1 tally.

At home against the Spirits, freshman Sophia Martel scored three goals for Soledad and Micaela Mojica, Alondra Juarez and Karina Aguilar scored two goals apiece. Juarez was credited with two assists and Larissa Rodriguez and Judith Verdeja added single assists.

“The Lady Aztecs feel blessed with the opportunity to play a small season,” said head coach Maria Zamora. “Our seniors are leading and supporting younger players and all together are a united and coachable group.”

On Monday, the Lady Aztecs played against the San Benito Haybalers in Hollister and continue play Thursday against the Pacific Grove Breakers.

The Aztec boys were led against Palma by Salvador Zepeda’s two goals. Contributing with solo goals were Ansel Cossyleon, Diego Guillen, Jean-Luc Martel, Edson Arreola and Elias Arreola. Earning assists on the goals were Elias Arreola, Cossyleon and Jesus Plaza.

“We played our first game of the season with a very young team, and have just two senior players,” said head coach Genero Espinosa. “The team is showing at times hints of great passing and communication. Weather may play a factor on this season, since we are not used to playing with the wind so intense at this time of the year. I’m glad we were able to start on the right foot on this Covid-19 soccer season.”

The Aztecs hosted the San Benito Haybalers on Tuesday and will have another home game Thursday against the Monterey High Toreadores.

The Gonzales Spartan boys hosted the York Falcons on Tuesday and will travel to Carmel for a game Thursday against the Padres.
