SALINAS VALLEY — A 3-0 start in the Cypress Division has the Gonzales High varsity girls soccer team in first place after wins last week at home against North Salinas and on the road to King City.
“We won 1-0 versus North Salinas with the decisive goal scored by Izabella Mandujano,” said Gonzales head coach Jose Tejeda. “Natalia Valdez delivered an excellent performance in goal, recording six saves, to earn the shutout. Key defensive contributions from Alitzel Mauro, Andrea Amador and Vivian Uribe were instrumental in preserving the clean sheet.”
Last Thursday in their first division game on the road, Gonzales beat the Mustangs, 2-0. Mandujano and Janelle Garcia scored for the Spartans, with assists by Mandujano and Garcia. Valdez made seven saves.
Mauro, Amador, Uribe and Zahaira Vegas helped Valdez earn the shutout victory.
King City (0-1-2 in Cypress, 1-6-3 overall) completed the week with a 0-0 tie against St. Francis in Watsonville.
Greenfield Bruins (1-0-3 in Cypress, 4-3-3 overall) beat Palma last Tuesday, 2-1, on goals by Aideliz Moreno and Alexeen Sanchez. Yesenia Patricio and Ailyn Salazar were credited with assists and goalie Kimberly Zavala made eight saves. Last Thursday the Bruins finished in a 0-0 tie at St. Francis.
Soledad Aztecs (0-2-2 in Gabilan, 6-4-1 overall) lost at home last Monday to Everett Alvarez and played Pajaro Valley to a 1-1 tie last Wednesday in Watsonville.
Jeannette Valdez scored the Soledad goal with an assist by Nichole Gonzalez.
In girls soccer games this week: Gonzales plays Wednesday at St. Francis and on Friday in Greenfield; King City will host Palma on Friday; and Soledad is at Rancho San Juan in Salinas on Friday.
BOYS SOCCER
Gonzales boys had a win, a loss and a tie last week in the Cypress Division.
The Spartans began the week with a 4-0 win over Robert Louis Stevenson last Monday with goals by Vicente Davila (two), Jorge Uribe and Luis Cabada. Assists were credited to Emmanuel Valdez (two), Uribe and Ricardo Rosas.
Last Wednesday in the battle for first place, the Spartans (2-2-1 in Mission, 7-2-3 overall) were shut out 2-0 by the host Watsonville Wildcatz. Cabada had 10 saves at his goalie position for Gonzales.
On Friday at Dick Force Stadium in Gonzales, Rafael Merino scored a goal for King City that held up until the final play of the contest when Gonzales’ Emmanuel Valdez scored the tying goal on an assist by Jorge Lara. Cabada had seven saves in the game.
Earlier in the week, King City (2-2-1 in Mission, 5-6-1 overall) defeated Seaside, 4-1. Bryan Gonzales scored two goals and added an assist, and Merino scored a goal. Randy Cid and Jesus Quintana both had assists.
Greenfield (2-1-2 in Gabilan, 4-3-4 overall) beat the Palma Chieftains, 3-1, last Tuesday in Salinas.
Braulio Zuniga scored one goal with an assist by Jesus Pantoja, and Alex Sanchez scored the second Bruin goal with an assist by Adrian Lara. Zuniga scored the third Greenfield goal on a penalty kick. Goalie Daniel Altamirano had three saves.
In their second match of the week, Greenfield played Hollister to a 2-2 tie. Sanchez scored the Bruin goals with assists by David Zavala and Pantoja.
Soledad (3-1 in Cypress, 7-2-3 overall) lost 1-0 to Ceiba last week before gaining a 3-0 victory over the Pacific Collegiate Pumas. Jesus Ortiz, Christian Romero and Alexander Rodriguez scored a goal and had two assists.
Games on Thursday will feature Salinas at Gonzales, Rancho San Juan at Soledad and Templeton at King City. On Friday, Greenfield will host Everett Alvarez.
