GONZALES — A vacancy has come up on the Gonzales Unified School District Board of Trustees, and the district has 60 days to fill the position.
The topic on finding a new board trustee came up during the previous board meeting March 26. The vacancy came about after former School Board Trustee Liz Funk resigned.
“I look forward to one of the community members that have been so vocal and participating, stepping forward and volunteering to join us at the table and see what it’s like to listen to everyone’s comments,” said Board Trustee Yolanda Almanzar. “We do this out of the kindness of our heart and we want you to join us. You’re welcome to apply for the position.”
According to the Gonzales School Board bylaws, if the vacancy occurs longer than four months before the end of a board member’s term, the board shall, within 60 days of the date of the vacancy, either order an election or make a provisional appointment. Funk’s term ends in November, seven months from now.
In the case of a provisional appointment, the board would advertise for candidate applications or nominations. Then a committee would ensure the applicants are eligible for board membership and announce the names of the eligible candidates. The candidates would be interviewed by the board at a public meeting, giving time for oral and written public input, and selecting the provisional appointee by a majority vote.
The next school board meeting is April 23.
