Salinas Valley State Prison inmate dies from stabbing

SOLEDAD — California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation officials are investigating the death of an inmate at Salinas Valley State Prison as a homicide.

Inmate Cory Benton suffered multiple stab wounds after allegedly being attacked by three other inmates with an inmate-manufactured weapon at about 3:19 p.m. on Oct. 15.

Life-saving measures were performed, but Benton was pronounced dead at 4:25 p.m. while en route to an outside medical facility.

The suspects, Alberto Valades, Jose Valle and Jimmy Martinez, have been moved to restricted housing pending investigation into this case.

Benton, 40, was received from Santa Barbara County on Nov. 30, 2012, to serve 25 years for assault with a deadly weapon and other felonies.
