RECYCLING EVENT
KING CITY — King City Community Recycling Event will take place Saturday, Oct. 16, from 8 to 10:30 a.m. at the Salinas Valley Fairgrounds, 625 Division St., in King City. Accepted items include mattresses, appliances (no Freon), yard waste, electronic waste, metals, furniture, tires (limit two per vehicle) and household hazardous waste in limited capacity: anti-freeze, batteries (household and automobile), motor oil and automobile filters, latex paint (one gallon jugs only) and medical sharps (in approved containers). King City in Bloom’s cleanup event will be the same day from 8:30 to 10 a.m. Volunteers will meet at the fairgrounds to pick up gloves and bags. Free coffee and donuts will be available. MONTEREY COUNTY — On behalf of the Monterey County Board of Supervisors, Arts Council for Monterey County is seeking original works of art for a juried show at the Government Center at Schilling Place in Salinas. Sixty-five paintings, photographs, drawings or mixed media will be selected celebrating Monterey County. SALINAS — Salinas native Ruben Pizarro, director of the Salinas Valley Dream Academy, will be featured on Gil Basketball Academy’s new “Ganas — Leading from the Heart” podcast on Oct. 18. Pizarro founded SVDA to help provide young people with the opportunities and personal and collective empowerment they need to reach their full potential. “Ganas,” which translates to “desire,” is recorded live from the family garage of Jose Gil and Eva Silva, co-founders of GBA that promotes the sport of basketball in East Salinas through camps, clinics, individual sessions and elite travel teams.
