Seafood donation program expands to Salinas nonprofit
CENTRAL COAST — Monterey Bay Fisheries Trust has partnered with Nancy’s Project to provide donated local seafood to the organization beginning this month.
The first distribution is scheduled for May 6, when Nancy’s Project will begin including the seafood in its food assistance efforts serving the farmworking community in Salinas.
The partnership is part of the trust’s Community Seafood Program, launched in 2020 to supply sustainably harvested seafood to families, seniors and others in need while supporting local fishermen and seafood businesses. The program has provided more than 140,000 meals to date.

Grocery Outlet to celebrate grand opening in King City
KING CITY — The community is invited to celebrate the grand opening of the new Grocery Outlet in King City on Thursday, May 7, with festivities beginning at 7 a.m. and a special ribbon-cutting ceremony at 10 a.m.
The event will include a donation presentation benefiting the Mustang Bench Booster Club, highlighting the store’s commitment to local partnerships. The new location, branded as an “Xtreme Value Headquarters,” will be independently operated by Deleynna and Joshua Cox.
Opening day promotions include gift card giveaways for the first 100 customers and app-exclusive savings, along with a chance for shoppers to win up to $1,000 in free groceries through a promotional event running from May 7 through June 5. Customers who attend the grand opening can also receive a limited-edition reusable bag while supplies last.
The store is located at 1015 Broadway St. and will be open daily from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m.
County holds one-day surplus sale Friday
SALINAS — County of Monterey is inviting the public to a one-day surplus sale featuring used office furniture and equipment.
The sale is scheduled for Friday, May 8, from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at 1488 Schilling Place in Salinas. Items available include office furniture, desk and guest chairs, lateral and vertical file cabinets and bookcases.
Shoppers should be aware that all items are sold “as is,” and all sales are final. The county requires exact cash payments only — no personal checks will be accepted. Buyers must also be prepared to remove their purchases on the day of the sale.
Registration opens for summer animal camps
MONTEREY COUNTY — SPCA Monterey County is accepting registrations for its 2026 summer animal camps, offering children hands-on learning experiences focused on animal care, safety and compassion.
Camps will be held at the SPCA campus in the Claire Jacobson Learning Center and include activities such as animal safety lessons, guided hikes, crafting enrichment items for shelter animals and interactions with rescued wildlife, horses and barn animals.
New this year is a Junior Vet Camp for children ages 10-12, which will introduce participants to veterinary medicine through focused instruction and activities. Camp sessions include Animal Camp for ages 7-12 from June 8 through July 24, Junior Vet Camp from July 27-31, and ABC’s of the SPCA for ages 5-7 from Aug. 3-7.
