Hwy 1 traffic control planned south of Big Creek Bridge
MONTEREY COUNTY — Motorists traveling in both directions on Highway 1 south of Big Creek Bridge will encounter daytime one-way reversing traffic control beginning Wednesday, June 17, according to Caltrans.
Traffic control will be in effect from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Wednesday through Friday, June 19, and again from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday, June 22, through Friday, June 26, at Post Mile 27.8.
Travelers should expect delays of up to 10 minutes. Caltrans said crews will use the lane closure to conduct investigative drilling operations in the southbound lane.
King City adjusts City Hall hours due to staffing levels
KING CITY — City of King announced that City Hall offices will now close during the lunch hour on Fridays and on days preceding holidays due to current staffing levels.
The schedule change took effect June 12. Under the new hours, City Hall is closed from noon to 1 p.m. every Friday and from noon to 1 p.m. on any day before a holiday.
“We appreciate your understanding and apologize for any inconvenience,” City officials said.
Deadline nears for Soledad Youth Council applications
SOLEDAD — City of Soledad is accepting applications through June 19 for the 2026-27 Soledad Youth Council, a program designed to encourage leadership, civic engagement and public service among local teens.
The council is open to students ages 13 to 18 who are either Soledad residents or enrolled in a Soledad-based school. Participants must commit to serving for the full school year from July 2026 through June 2027.
The program offers two levels of participation. Youth Commissioners serve as appointed youth leaders who help develop programs and initiatives, organize events, collaborate with city officials and participate in council discussions and voting. Youth Members serve as volunteers who assist with event planning, community outreach and other council activities.
According to the city, council members act as a link between local youth and government by communicating youth concerns, working with city staff and elected officials, collaborating with community organizations, and participating in community projects and events.
Members are expected to attend two meetings each month, contribute to at least one Youth Council project per quarter and dedicate about eight hours per month to council activities, with additional time required for special events.

Hartnell hosts 6th annual Juneteenth celebration Thursday
SALINAS — Hartnell College will host its sixth annual Juneteenth celebration from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Thursday, June 18, at the Main Campus Student Center, 411 Central Ave., in Salinas.
The free, all-ages event will feature a complimentary lunch, live music and educational programming under this year’s theme, “Know Our History, Shape Our Future.” The celebration is hosted by Hartnell College with the support of the Salinas Juneteenth Celebration Association.
Juneteenth, recognized as a national holiday, commemorates the end of slavery in the United States and marks a pivotal moment in American history. The day honors African American freedom and underscores the importance of education, reflection and community as the nation continues its journey toward equality and justice.
The celebration is designed to honor Black history and culture while creating a welcoming, festive atmosphere for all ages. Guests can enjoy live music, hands-on educational and cultural activities, and a free lunch, building on a tradition that has grown each year through Hartnell’s partnership with the Salinas Juneteenth Celebration Association.
