WHALEFEST RETURNS

MONTEREY — Dedicated to protecting the Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary and all oceans, the 14th Annual Whalefest Monterey will be held Saturday and Sunday, April 13 and 14, a week before Earth Day, on and around Old Fisherman’s Wharf in Monterey. Whalefest Monterey includes fun and educational activities for all ages, live music, abalone races, whale origami, gyotaku and scrimshaw activities, a 43-foot walk-in inflatable whale, a 30-foot whale skeleton and more than three dozen marine-related interactive exhibits by local and national organizations. There will be several research and rescue boats available for public tours, including the recently restored Western Flyer (reservation needed; Sunday only). Sunday, April 14, will feature a Symposium at the Stanton Center with marine science experts on such topics as otters, sharks, whales and more. On both days, there will be Wharf Walks and also a Calamari Cooking Demo by award-winning Chef Tene Shake. All the restaurants on Old Fisherman’s Wharf serve the popular calamari in a variety of styles. More information is available at whalefest.org and montereywharf.com.

SALINAS — Monterey County Works is working with employers across the Central Coast to offer an opportunity to connect with a variety of employers that are hiring throughout the area. Register today for the following job fairs in Salinas: Tuesday, April 16, at Monterey County Office of Education, 901 Blanco Circle, Rooms A and B, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.; Thursday, April 18, at America’s Job Center, 344 Salinas St., Suites 205-206, 2 to 5 p.m.; and Tuesday, April 30, at Cesar Chavez Library, 615 Williams Road, 1 to 4 p.m. To register, visit montereycountyworks.com. CAR SHOW

GONZALES — City of Gonzales is hosting a Car Show along Fourth Street on Saturday, April 20, from 1 to 4 p.m. This fun, family-friendly community event will include food vendors, a DJ, dance performances, the Gonzales High School band, and will wrap up with an awards ceremony. Individuals interested in participating in the car show must register. Pre-registrations will be accepted until 4 p.m. on April 19.
