GONZALES — City of Gonzales ushered in a new set of councilmembers last week while honoring two other members who have now left their seats.
In the Nov. 6 general election, voters re-elected Mayor Maria Orozco for another two-year term. Orozco won against Henry Martinez Jr. with 80 percent of the vote from residents.
“The election results were certified (by the county) last week,” said City Manager Rene Mendez at the Dec. 3 council meeting.
After the election results were approved locally by the outgoing council and serving councilmembers, Orozco was sworn in as mayor by Mendez.
Mayor Pro-Tem Elizabeht “Liz” Silva was also up for re-election in November and resumed her position after receiving 30 percent of the vote.
Joining Silva and Orozco were new Councilmembers Paul Miller and Lorraine Worthy. Miller, the former Gonzales police chief, received 32 percent of the vote, while Worthy, who previously served on the Measure K Committee, received 27 percent.
Leaving the council that evening was Robert Bonincontri, who served on the city council for 16 years and on the Gonzales Planning Commission for 15 years.
“It’s been a true privilege working for Mr. Bonincontri the last six years,” Mendez said.
Orozco praised Bonincontri for his years of service with the city council and the planning commission.
“Your years of dedication and service are greatly appreciated,” said Orozco to Bonincontri.
Councilmember Jose Lopez also chose not to seek re-election to the council and tried for a seat with the Gonzales Unified School District.
