To the Editor:
In honor of Mental Health Awareness Month in May, I wanted to emphasize the importance of self-care. It is important to raise mental health awareness in our community as well as advocating for self-care.
We live in a society where many individuals are focused and determined to grow professionally. This can often lead to overworking, stress, burn out and an overall decline in mental health. Self-care can look different from person to person, but the purpose of practicing self-care is to take care of yourself physically, mentally and emotionally.
Taking care of our mental health is just as important as taking care of our physical health. Practicing self-care can seem like a simple task, but many of us pay little attention to it and tend to ignore it. Listening to our body and practicing self-care is very important as it can positively affect our mental health.
Everyone has mental health, and self-care is not only for individuals with mental illnesses. Never feel guilty about taking care of yourself and make sure to incorporate self-care activities to your daily routine.
Being self-aware and taking the time to do things for our well-being will help us refresh, recharge and perform at our best.
