To the Editor:

We much enjoyed Steve Wilson’s column about gangsters he has known — or at least, thought about (“Words From One Bad Guy to Another,” June 29). It’s exciting to review the daring exploits of these cunning reprobates and satisfying when the sheriff finally catches up with them.

We shall certainly look for “Manhattan Melodrama,” which I think was made before the days of movie censorship. For a completely different take on gangs, I commend “The Cross and the Switchblade,” where a young Pat Boone plays a naive pastor who is drawn to New York to reach out to Puerto Rican gangs of mainly teenagers.

This one is a true story of the gritty streets and what happens when pastor Dave Wilkerson dips his hesitant toes into a whirling maelstrom — I won’t spoil it for you, but you’ll be on the edge of your seat!
