Reader’s view of ballot choices
A couple of days ago I exercised the franchise given to us by the Constitution and cast my ballot in this year’s election; a notably contested election in a year of notable events. I want to take a few sentences to comment on the local elections, if I may.
Because the South Monterey County Joint Union High School District board of trustees sought to fill three seats, I can reveal my choice for one of them, I trust, without offense to the other two candidates. I voted for David Gaboni. Why? Well, mainly because he stood in the yard of the house where I rent a room and spoke knowledgeably about issues with which I was concerned, mainly the future use of the KCHS Auditorium, the home of the Robert Stanton Theater.
We aligned on pertinent aspects of that historic structure so he had me leaning his way, but it was when he revealed that during his KCHS years — he’s a locally grown product — he was a dramatis personae, aka “theater rat,” that sealed my vote. Beyond that, Mr. Gaboni’s credentials, experience and insights make him, in my opinion, more that worthy to continue as a trustee.
My other comment is that it was a bit disheartening to see only one person seeking a seat, an incumbent, for a city council seat when more than one vacancy looms. Perhaps a worthy write-in candidate will appear.
