GONZALES — The first-ever International Grandparents Day celebration is set to take place this Sunday, Sept. 10, at Central Park.
International Grandparents Day will be from noon to 4 p.m. and will serve to create a map of Gonzales residents’ roots, documenting different family stories, arts and crafts and storytime. Food and music will also be available during the event.
The Catholic Church is hosting the event and does a lot of work with intergenerational and multi-cultural members coming together.
“I thought that maybe it being International Grandparents Day, we could take it to the whole community, invite everybody to join us,” said Sister Pauline Thomas. “I really thought it would be good to have the lives of our grandparents represented.”
Thomas said the hope is that the event will celebrate all the cultures in Gonzales that make up the city.
“This is the first time we are doing this,” Thomas said. “We will be creating a map of our roots. Gonzales will be highlighted on the world map and look at what our origins are and trace it back to where we are right now.”
