Hello again, dear reader! It’s been the better part of a decade since I was a member of the South County Newspapers crew (now known as New SV Media). I’m happy to return to writing about and photographing the many events and stories of SoMoCo.
Those of you who remember me might be wondering what I’ve been up to.
I focused on writing and photography projects and I also went to Cal State Monterey Bay to finish my degree. The entire time, I kept one foot in journalism, from
freelance reporting to delivering guest lectures about photojournalism to university classes.
The subject I studied is officially called “Humanities and Communication with a concentration in English Subject Matter Preparation,” which is CSUMB’s fancy way of saying English Teaching.
Most recently, I was substitute teaching and getting an idea of what grade level I’d most like to teach. It gave me an insight into the colossal challenges faced by teachers every single day in their classrooms, as well as the mountain of tasks districts have to manage. I’ll get to finishing that teaching credential in the not-too-distant future.
Meanwhile, the need to travel efficiently on campus caused me to take up cycling while at CSUMB, which extended to fitness in general. I encourage everyone to try area races or events. Next week is a 5K run in Pacific Grove, and next month there’s a Spartan Race in Santa Margarita. It would be great to see other local runners out there, because I’m certainly going to both.
Future columns will focus on adventure and fitness, especially what opportunities exist in our neck of the woods. Perhaps I will write about the formation of local running or cycling clubs, as I’ve enjoyed a handful of group rides so far and hope to establish regular events in South Monterey County. Who’s with me?
