GONZALES — Gonzales Adult School and Sun Street Centers are joining together to bring health awareness presentations to parents in Gonzales. The next presentation is scheduled for Feb. 21 from 6 to 7:30 p.m. at the Parent Resource Center, Room C.
The prescription drug presentation is the second of three lectures aimed at parents to learn about drugs in disguise, access to drugs as wells as the harmful effects and warning signs. The previous workshop was on the topic of alcohol and vaping, and the final workshop planned for Feb. 28 will discuss marijuana and dabbing.
“We do like to teach the physical effects marijuana has on the brain and on the adolescent brain,” said Darlene Acosta of Sun Street Centers. “Our brains grow until we’re 25, and it’s statistically proven that long-term use or beginning at a young age causes more problems.”
Sun Street Centers works closely with South County high schools and has discovered youth are making homemade edibles. According to Acosta, these students have figured out how to extract the THC and there isn’t a way to determine how potent those doses are — not to mention the danger involved.
About 12 parents were part of the first presentation, and child care will be provided for those who need it. The Parent Resource Center is located between Fairview Middle School and La Gloria Elementary School.
