GONZALES ­­­­— The Gonzales High School girls tennis team completed the non-league schedule last week with matches against the York School Falcons and the Everett Alvarez Eagles. The Spartans battled York in a 5-2 loss, winning two doubles matches and falling in the singles matches.

Against Everett Alvarez, Gonzales was shutout by a 7-0 score although the Spartans score points in the singles and doubles matches. Gonzales head coach Rene Mendez was pleased with the efforts of his team in both contests.

Doubles-Adilenne Ramirez-Valeria Reyes (GO) def. Kira William-Madison Kimball 4-6, 6-4, 8-10; Jacqueline Ramirez-Jesenia Arreola (GO) won by forfeit. Exhibition-Iris Valdez (GO) def. Danica Tang 6-0, 7-5.

“Athena played extremely well against the best player in the league,” said Mendez. “She was awarded the singles match ball for her great effort. Elizabeth is a sophomore and played her first singles match. Isabel did well in her first singles match and Bianca hung in there for the entire time. In doubles it was a great win for Adileene and Valeria. They got better as the match wore on and took control of the match in the second set. Very young team with many of the girls playing for the first time. Overall they played well and hustled.”

“Athena played a great second set and the match could have gone her way against an experienced opponent,” said Mendez. “Elizabeth never really got untracked but hung in there. It was a great match for Isabel and Bianca played a great second set. Very slow start for Adilenne and Valeria but got on track in the second set. It was the first time playing for Ashley and Alexa and they did well. Overall the team tried but fell short.”

Gonzales received a bye in the first Mission Trail Athletic League matches yesterday but will play Oakwood tomorrow in Morgan Hill.
