You may have read recently that out of the 1,353 Critical Access Hospitals (CAHs) across the United States, Mee Memorial Healthcare System was named by Becker’s Hospital Review as one of 27 CAHs to know in 2024. But what exactly is a CAH, and why does Mee Memorial stand out?
CAHs play a crucial role in ensuring that residents in remote areas receive essential medical services. Becker’s describes them as small but mighty organizations that are vital components of the overall healthcare delivery system. They provide quality care to residents, work to expand access to specialty care, reduce patient travel times, and improve overall health for rural and remote communities.
The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) grants certain rural hospitals a CAH designation under the Medicare Rural Hospital Flexibility Program. This program aims to reduce rural hospitals’ financial vulnerability and improve access to healthcare by keeping essential services local in communities where healthcare accessibility is a critical aspect of community well-being.
CAHs serve nearly 750,000 of California’s 2.3 million rural residents, ensuring these populations have access to essential healthcare services, which is crucial for timely treatment and improved health outcomes. CAHs also serve as primary care providers, offering preventive services that help manage chronic conditions and reduce the need for more intensive care. Additionally, they contribute significantly to the local economy by providing jobs and supporting community infrastructure.
Despite their importance, CAHs face significant challenges in the current economic climate:
- High operational costs and reimbursement inequities often threaten their financial sustainability.
- Attracting doctors and clinical staff to remote areas can be difficult, with providers sometimes having to travel long distances to provide care.
- When a CAH closes, those in poor health, seniors, and people experiencing poverty suffer the most. For everyone in the community, a closure means the travel distance to access inpatient services increases by at least 20 miles.
Mee Memorial Healthcare System has strategically implemented several solutions to address these challenges and fulfill our mission to provide high-quality care to our patient population:
- We are enhancing service offerings by renovating our emergency and diagnostic imaging departments and adding a children’s health and wellness center.
- We are participating in the Rural Healthcare Provider Transition Project, which prepares us for an alternative payment and care delivery model.
- Along with other California CAHs, we are actively advocating for a better reimbursement model to ensure sustainability.
- We have built partnerships with other healthcare and educational organizations, resulting in resource sharing, training opportunities, and improved provider recruitment.
- We are continually focused on increasing quality, culture, community education, and community outreach.
- While financial constraints have sometimes necessitated difficult decisions, including service adjustments, our commitment to providing essential healthcare services remains steadfast. We continue to adapt and innovate to meet the needs of our community effectively.
