GONZALES — The City of Gonzales’ Alta Street is the site of the second Measure X project in Monterey County and the second roadway project in South County, breaking ground Nov. 1.
The groundbreaking ceremony was attended by many Gonzales city officials, Supervisor Simon Salinas, Transportation Agency for Monterey County (TAMC) Executive Director Debbie Hale and members of Granite Construction of Salinas, who were awarded the contract for the $5 million Alta Street Rehabilitation Project. The design of the project was under the Harris and Associates team.
Measure X was on the November 2016 ballot as a three-eighths percent sales tax that was effective as of April. According to TAMC, Measure X is anticipated to generate $20 million annually for 30 years.
The Alta Street Rehabilitation Project will begin from 10th Street to Gonzales River Road and a section of the roadway between Constellation Winery and Dole. Constellation Winery will have its southern driveway open, and the north driveway at Dole will be open. Once that area is completed, Granite Construction crews will work on the south driveway for Constellation and the north driveway for Dole.
The project is anticipated to take five months and has been said that it will disrupt traffic in the area, so drivers should add an additional 10 to 15 minutes to their travel time.
Updates on the status of the project will come weekly from the City of Gonzales.
