GREENFIELD — Greenfield Police Department will be charging a local man with attempted murder and criminal threats following a four-hour standoff Sunday morning.

On June 11, at about 9:20 a.m., Greenfield Police officers responded to a report of criminal threats and brandishing of a weapon in the 200 block of Sirrah Way in Greenfield.

When officers arrived, the man — whose name was not released — threatened them as he retreated into his home, according to a GPD news release. Family members expressed to officers that they were also concerned for their safety, police said.

Soledad Police Department, Monterey County Sheriff’s Office and the Monterey County Crisis Response Team provided assistance, but after four hours, negotiation attempts were “not successful,” police said.

Officers made entry into the home, at which time the man attacked an officer with a “stabbing-type improvised handheld weapon,” according to the release. The officer had a ballistic shield and was not injured.

The man, reportedly in his late 50s, was taken into custody after officers deployed less lethal methods to apprehend him. He was placed on a 5150 mental health hold.

The department is seeking criminal charges, including attempted murder on a peace officer and criminal threats.

“Although this incident took several hours, it is our goal to handle situations at the lowest force level as possible, especially with a person in crisis,” police said in the release. “We are grateful for the assistance from the Soledad Police Department, the Monterey County Sheriff’s Office, the Sheriff’s Office Hostage Negotiation Team (HNT), the Monterey County Crisis Response Team, the Greenfield Fire Department, AMR, and the Monterey County Emergency Dispatchers. We also appreciate our community members for their support and patience.”
