GREENFIELD — The 246th Battalion of the California Cadet Corps of Greenfield High School continues to grow — from last year’s 130 cadets to this year’s 170 cadet enrollment.
Recently, the unit was awarded the Unit Community Service Ribbon for serving nearly 2,000 school and community hours during the 2024-25 school year. Cadets assisted the athletic department at sports functions, as well as the Greenfield American Legion with service projects.
The 246th Battalion had over 30 cadets attend Summer Encampment in June. Summer Encampment is a 10- to 14-day program open to cadets statewide in fourth through 12th grades.
“The first three days of camp are dedicated to leadership development, while during the final seven days cadets have the opportunity to focus on specific learning,” according to the unit.

GHS cadets enrolled in the Drill Instructor Unit, Medic Unit, Drone Unit, Non-Commissioned Officer Academy, Marksmanship Unit, Drill and Ceremony, Officer Candidate School, Law Enforcement Unit, Mountaineering Unit, Survival Unit and 10th BDE Staff.
At the 2025 Summer Encampment Pass in Review, the 246th Battalion Commander C/LTC Diego Nuñez was appointed to the position of the 10th BDE Commander. In this leadership role, Nuñez will lead nearly 10,000 cadets statewide.
During the final week of July, the 246th Battalion hosted its own Leadership Academies and OCS this summer. New cadet leaders learned about the fundamentals of proper leadership and drill to prepare for leading new and returning cadets during the 2025-26 school year.
The 246th Battalion is also sponsoring the Cadet Club at Greenfield High School every Monday, Tuesday and Thursday after school from 3:15 to 5 p.m. Every student is welcome. Attendees can use the classroom to study or join cadets outside to learn drill and ceremony.
