GONZALES — The boys and girls from the Gonzales High School soccer programs held a combined sports banquet March 1 at the school’s cafeteria. Players were honored for their work on the soccer pitch and for their efforts in the classroom.

Players, coaches and family members were treated to pizza and snacks before the awards presentation.

Gonzales girls soccer coach Tiburcio Manriquez introduced his players and presented athletic certificates to each athlete and presented school and Central Coast Section certificates for students with high grade point averages. The Spartans were members of the Coastal League this season and placed second in league standings behind Anzar High School.

Receiving All-League honors for the Gonzales girls were: Selene Virgen, Susana Tejeda, and Ashley Ochoa. Marilyn Rodriguez was a chosen as a member of the All-League second team.

Special team awards were then presented to the following athletes: Isabella Arriola and Citlali Villegas, Spartans Awards; Lizbeth Carrillo and Melanie Barrera, Coaches Awards; Susana Tejeda, Offensive Player of the Year; and Ashley Ochoa was the Most Valuable Player.

Ochoa, a freshman was also a member of the MTAL All-League cross country team and represented Gonzales at the CCS Championships.

Varsity boys head coach Juan Flores introduced his MTAL championship team and presented school and GPA certificates to his players. Receiving special team awards were: Erik Mata, Most Valuable Player; Jaime Villarruel, Most Improved; Jaime Martinez, Coaches Award; and Felipe Torres, Spartan Award.

JV head coach Mikie Flores presented his team and gave out special team awards to Jairo Villarruel, Most Valuable Player and Jesus Trujllo, Coaches Award.
