GONZALES — Gonzales Unified School District has announced the appointment of Matilde Zamora as the new superintendent, following approval from the Board of Trustees at its June 14 meeting.

Zamora was selected from a pool of 31 applicants after a recruitment by a search firm. She will begin her work in the district on July 5.

“After a thorough, thoughtful and transparent process, the Board is thrilled to announce Dr. Zamora’s appointment,” said Board President Celeste Daniel. “Dr. Zamora brings a broad-based skill set to her new role as superintendent. Dr. Zamora is committed to student success, and she has a proven track record improving student achievement. We look forward to Dr. Zamora bringing these skills to Gonzales.”

According to a district news release, the Board chose Zamora “based upon her proven track record as an instructional leader, her passion for the achievement and success of students, and her collaborative approach to school leadership.”

Zamora has more than 20 years of experience as a school administrator, as well as brings expertise in programs for English Language Learners.

She earned her doctorate degree from the University of Southern California and received her master’s and bachelor’s degrees from California State University Los Angeles.

Zamora replaces former Superintendent Yvette Irving, whose employment agreement with the district was terminated without cause by the Board in March.
