GONZALES ā€” Last Wednesday afternoon, 77 members of the Gonzales High School FFA held a door-to-door food drive to collect food for the Food Bank for Monterey Countyā€™s Gonzales Program.

The large group of students collected a total of 988 pounds of food for the Food Bank.

ā€œThe last time that Gonzales FFA food drive took place was in 2019, and the current officers wanted to bring it back,ā€ said Gonzales High FFA Reporter Valeria Beltran. ā€œWe had an immense amount of help from our FFA members and are happy to see how these members gave back to their community. We hope to continue this event in the future and would like to thank all those who participated in serving their community, showed great leadership skills and dedication. We also like to thank our local food bank for their support and service.ā€

Helping to facilitate the March 13 event were the FFA officers and advisers Cecilia Birmingham, Eric Morasca and Kelly Dawkins.

The FFA collected food in wheelbarrows throughout Gonzales and then met at the local Food Bank site, where the food was placed in large bags and weighed by Morasca.

Beltran led a group of 14 FFA members that took first place in food collection with 224 pounds.

Gonzales FFA will be staying busy with chapter events the next few months and will also be preparing their animals and other exhibits at the Salinas Valley Fair in May.

In its meeting on April 17, elections will take place and students will hear the slated candidatesā€™ speeches that are running to be FFA officers in 2024-25.

On May 2, the Gonzales FFA will host its annual banquet, during which the new chapter officers will be elected and announced and students will be recognized for both green-hand and chapter levels.
