GONZALES — A packed house of athletes and their families gathered last Wednesday at the Gonzales High School cafeteria for the track and field awards night and dinner. The Spartans enjoyed a warm meal of baked potatoes and all the fixings and desserts.

After dinner head coach Margie Daniels presented the team members with certificates of participation and pins for new and returning athletes. Daniels then presented school awards for high grade point average to many of the student-athletes. Central Coast Section certificates were also presented to the athletes with the highest GPA’s.

Coach Daniels also presented CCS certificates to track athletes that competed at the CCS semifinals.

These athletes were: Pablo Villasenor, Jasmin Yadao, Damian Acosta, Matthew Cortez, Hernan Cortez, Nathan Perez, Ulysses Fierros, Madisyn Schweitzer, Athena Landeros, Alyssa Martinez, and Bianca Sanchez.

Special team awards were given to the following athletes: Pablo Villasenor (Most Valuable Player); Hernan Mojica (Sportsmanship); Ulysses Fierros (Spartan Award); Nathen Perez  and Xavier Jimenez (Rising Star); Mario Martinez (Most Improved Jumper); Faustino Mendez (Most Improved Distance);  Jossue Valdez and Javier Perez (Coach’s Choice); Damian Acosta (Top Performer); and Matthew Cortez (Outstanding Athlete).

Special team awards for the girls team were: Madisyn Schweitzer (Outstanding Athlete); Jackie Ramirez (Sportmanship); Jasmin Yadao (Most Valuable Player); Bianca Sanchez (Top Performer); Athena Landeros (Spartan Award); Isabel Mendoza (Coach’s Choice); and Leslie Hernandez (Most Improved).

After the special awards were handed out the team and their families sat back and enjoyed a video slide show that was prepared by Coach Daniels.
