GONZALES — Gonzales High School girls’ basketball team ended the season at home last Friday with a 51-43 loss to the Scotts Valley Falcons in the first round of the Central Coast Section Division IV playoffs.

The Spartans, seeded 12th in the CCS tournament, only held the lead for a short time in the second quarter.

“We started off strong by running our game plan to a T,” said Gonzales head coach Desiree Baltazar. “It was back and forth the whole game, bucket for bucket. During the last five minutes, they (Falcons) began to pull away.”

Scotts Valley guard Brooklyn Williams got hot in the final quarter with three-point baskets and finished the game with 18 points and six three-point baskets. Alana McGrew led the Falcons on the boards with 15 rebounds.

Brianna Oliva had 16 points to lead the Spartans in scoring and added two rebounds and one blocked shot. Sophomore Angelina Navarro just missed double-figures in scoring with nine points and had nine rebounds and four blocked shots. Aryssa Sandoval finished with five points and Alexa Mendez had six points.

Gonzales ended the season with a 9-10 record, while the Falcons ended their playoff run the following night after a 57-25 loss to Harker and had a 7-16 record.
