Gang-related shooting kills 1 in Greenfield

Suspect in custody after Saturday morning incident

GREENFIELD — A 20-year-old Greenfield man has been arrested after he allegedly shot and killed another man in a gang-related incident Saturday morning.

According to the Greenfield Police Department, local officers responded to a victim of a shooting in the 50 block of Fourth Street at about 9:30 a.m. on Oct. 29. There they found Ramiro Silva Martin, 20, suffering from multiple gunshot wounds.

Martin was transported to Natividad Medical Center in Salinas, where he died shortly after arrival.

“Greenfield, Soledad and South Monterey County Task Force detectives, along with Crime Scene Investigators, were called in and took over the investigation, which consisted of processing physical evidence, reviewing city, business and residential home security cameras, and speaking to witnesses,” police said in a news release Saturday.

Through their investigation, detectives identified 20-year-old Jaime Cerna, of Greenfield, as the suspect. At about 11:30 a.m., Cerna was located at Mee Memorial Hospital in King City with a stab wound to the leg and taken into custody.

“The stab wound was consistent with what witnesses stated occurred on scene and other evidence that put Cerna at the scene,” police said.

Cerna was booked at the Monterey County Jail for homicide.

A subsequent search warrant at Cerna’s home in the 50 block of Moreno Street resulted in detectives finding a 9mm semiautomatic firearm, which is believed to be the murder weapon, along with ammunition and a loaded extended magazine.

“Through our investigation, it was learned Cerna was a Norteño gang member from Greenfield, and it appears the shooting was gang related,” police said.

Although Cerna was taken into custody, detectives are still seeking assistance from community members who may have information. They can call the WeTip line at 1-800-782-7463 (1-800-78-CRIME) or the Greenfield Police Department at 831-385-8311.

“We would also like to thank the Monterey County Sheriff’s Office, the CHP – King City and King City Police Department for their initial response and assistance on scene,” police said.
