GONZALES — Gonzales 4-H Club is growing with 66 new members and 20 adult volunteers this year.

According to Lucas Barba, vice president, there are 23 programs that 4-H members can choose from, including raising a market animal for the Salinas Valley, Monterey County, San Benito and Santa Cruz County fairs.

One of the big service-learning projects the Gonzales 4-H Club has ongoing is helping out foster children. The 4-H members visit foster children and give them bags filled with toys.

Aiding to the club’s overall well-rounded citizen building is the addition of a health officer to the club. The health officer talks to the Gonzales 4-H members about healthy food options, anti-bullying and ways for the members to stay physically active.

In order to raise funds for the club, the Gonzales 4-H Club just hosted its only fundraiser of the year, the Tri-Tip Barbecue at the Gonzales Fire Department.

“This is our only fundraiser and also the biggest fundraiser we have of the year, which helps our club tremendously,” said Robert Guillen, club treasurer.
