Fourth Street Tap House owners Bernadette and Hector Zavala plan to open a kitchen as well, but for now they serve 30 beers and many types of wines.
GONZALES — A new taphouse opened in Gonzales offering 30 various types of beers and more than a dozen different wine options.
Fourth Street Tap House owners Bernadette and Hector Zavala decided to open the business after the two began talking about opening a bar. The idea for a bar came from Hector and was just an idea until it wasn’t anymore.
“We wanted to bring something to Gonzales that was a place we would want to hang out in because there wasn’t really a craft beer place in this area,” Bernadette said.
Fourth Street Tap House opened July 2 at 25 Fourth St. in Gonzales, with a soft opening occurring a few days prior. The Zavalas did not have any prior experience in opening a bar, with Hector owning his own electrician business and Bernadette working for Monterey County Office of Education.
“He enjoys craft beer and I wasn’t a beer drinker until eight months ago when I started experimenting with craft beer,” Bernadette said. “I didn’t even know that craft beer existed, so when I started tasting everything I realized they have a whole other depth of flavor and are really good.”
The taphouse has 30 beers on tap ranging from lagers, IPA, brown ales, red ales, a cider and a nitro-tap that contains a heavier beer, in addition to an assortment of wines on hand. The beer list is displayed on a TV screen and is also available through a phone app.
The beers on tap range from California breweries to Louisiana, Maine and more. The wines available are local, from Manzoni Vineyards to Pessagno, Puma Road and others that make up 14 options total. For those over 21 years old and who maybe are the designated driver, there is flavored water options.
The Fourth Street Tap House doesn’t have a kitchen yet, but there are plans to add one in the future. Until the kitchen is open, bar goers can have food delivered from local restaurants. There are also several games to be played.
“We’re pretty laid back and we just want people to have a good time,” Bernadette said.
Currently the Fourth Street Tap House hours are Monday through Wednesday, 3 to 9 p.m., and Thursday through Saturday, 2 to 10 p.m. The hours could change once football season gets underway, possibly closing later on Wednesdays and even opening on Sundays.
