Fort Hunter Liggett hosts Youth Fishing Derby on Saturday

JOLON — Fort Hunter Liggett Directorate of Family and Morale, Welfare and Recreation will host the 18th annual Youth Fishing Derby on Saturday, April 24, at Del Venturi Reservoir, which will be stocked with about 1,700 pounds of rainbow trout.

Children up to age 15 from FHL and surrounding communities are invited and will not need a fishing permit. When the derby ends, the pond will be open for those with a California fishing license.

“My intent is to provide a safe fun-filled morning celebrating the Month of the Military Child,” said Garrison Commander Col. Charles Bell. “It is also an excellent opportunity for youth who have never been fishing before.”

Registration is required for participation and begins at 6:30 a.m. The derby ends at noon. There is a limit of five fish per youth, and first-, second- and third-place prizes will be given for the biggest fish caught by categories.

Breakfast and lunch will be available for purchase (cash only) the day of the event. Fishing poles and a limited amount of bait will be provided for up to 150 youth. Participants are encouraged to bring their own bait.

Covid-19 precautions will be in place, including temperature checks and social distancing, and only a maximum of 1,000 participants will be allowed entry this year.

The Youth Fishing Derby is sponsored by USAA, IHG Army Hotels, Boingo, McDonald’s, A&G Pumping, Inc., 4 Seasons Outfitters, JV Automobiles, Rio Farms, L.A. Hearne Company and Wildhorse Café.
