SOLEDAD — Going into last Friday’s games, only four more weeks remain in the high school football regular season. With the postseason out of reach for the Soledad Aztecs and the King City Mustangs, the pride that these two schools have will make them challenging teams down the stretch.
Last Friday was Homecoming Week for the Aztecs, who had yet to win a game on the field, but they were ready for the Rancho San Juan Trailblazers.
Coming into the game, Soledad was on their third-string quarterback. Both teams struggled to get any momentum in the game, but it was the Aztecs who were able to pull off a late-game miracle.
On the final drive of the game, third-string quarterback Marco Amador was hurt with less than two minutes remaining in the game, with the Aztecs down 14-13. With another quarterback out, Soledad would have to turn to their fourth-string quarterback Adam Velarde.
Velarde, who had not thrown a pass in a game this season, completed a huge pass on his first attempt to put the Aztecs deep in Rancho San Juan territory. With the game on the line, Velarde threw the ball into the endzone to find star receiver Victor Ruano, who caught the game-winning touchdown. The Aztecs won 20-14.
Soledad will travel to Carmel on Oct. 28 after their bye week.
Coming off a loss to North Salinas, the Mustangs had another tough game against the Alisal Trojans on Oct. 13. The young King City team was outmatched for the second straight week, losing to the Trojans 52-0.
The Mustangs will head to Carmel this Saturday to take on the Padres.
