GONZALES — As part of the local American Legion’s Memorial Day services, Post 81 will host a dedication ceremony for the new Memorial Wall in the Gonzales Cemetery on Monday, May 29, at 9 a.m.
The memorial honors local soldiers who served in the U.S. Armed Forces from the Civil War to present day conflicts. There are more than 500 names on the wall.
Pastor Mark DaVee of the Cypress Church of Gonzales will preside over the wall’s dedication.
During the service, the names of all the veterans on the wall will be announced.
This will be the last year that all the names are read aloud.
In the following years, only new names that have joined the wall will be announced.
It has been roughly two years in the making, but Post 81 was able to make the idea a reality through fundraising and donations.
The morning of the service, post members, their families and local Boy Scouts will erect the Avenue of Flags. Over 200 flags will line the cemetery, most donated by families of veterans and have a ribbon identifying their name.
The Avenue will be on display from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. The Post could use some local help taking down and folding the flag that evening.
A chicken barbecue and a bake sale fundraiser will also be held that day from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the American Legion Hall, 419 Fifth St., in Gonzales.
