GONZALES — The best of the City of Gonzales hit downtown Saturday night to usher in the Christmas season during the Holiday Lights celebration on Fourth Street.

Kicking off the Dec. 4 event was music from the Gonzales High School marching band, followed by a performance of Christmas songs by the first-grade class of teacher Lauren Ramirez at La Gloria Elementary. The youngsters sang medleys of “We Wish You A Merry Christmas,” “Happiest Christmas Tree” and “Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer.”

The last musical group to perform that night was the Barbra Ann Wagner Band of Gonzales, featuring Barbra Ann Wagner, Robert Wagner, Chris Gida and Aiden Banks. The band played a festive mix of Christmas music, rock ‘n’ roll and some modern favorites.

Food booths offered some holiday treats along with barbecue plates and Mexican specialties. The little ones were thrilled when Santa Claus made his entrance and took gift requests.

Just after 6 p.m., Gonzales firefighter Kyler Monares lit the huge Christmas tree in front of the city’s police department.

Residents and visitors also enjoyed food and warm drinks that were sold by local nonprofits.
