GONZALES — The City of Gonzales has hired Ulyses Fierros, a new animal control officer who started July 3.

Fierros said the animal control role has been great so far and that he loves his job.

“I have my slow days and occupied days,” he said. “I want to pursue a career in law enforcement.”

Prior to becoming the animal control officer, Fierros was a police explorer for four years. Fierros served as a captain with the explorers.

“I saw it as an opportunity to get some experience and be able to work alongside the officers here at the Gonzales Police Department,” he said.

Fierros sees the new role as a chance to learn from the Gonzales Police officers. He is a recent Gonzales High School graduate of the class of 2017.

Fierros said he has been having a lot of loose dog calls and has to take them to the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals for Monterey County, which he said was “sad.”

“It’s an honor to be able to serve my little town of Gonzales,” Fierros said. “Hopefully soon I can become a police officer and be able to give back even more.”
