SOLEDAD — Ciclovía Soledad has a new confirmed date of Aug. 22, after last year’s event was delayed due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

Members of the Ciclovía Soledad planning team spoke during Soledad Unified School District’s July 14 board meeting to discuss plans for the community event.

“It is an open-street, car-free event where the community can participate in health-related activities and learn about local resources and connect with the community,” said Joana Rojas, one of the Soledad youth on the planning team.

Soledad’s event will be the third Ciclovía in South Monterey County, with the first being Gonzales in 2018 and the second being King City in 2019. The events have been possible due to an active transportation grant in partnership with local cities and community agencies. The first Ciclovía in the area was held in Salinas in 2013, and this year will be that city’s ninth Ciclovía.

This year will be the first time a Ciclovia has come to Soledad.

“Ciclovía promotes physical activity because most of us don’t get the physical activity we need, so it’s a day off from being in cars and actually getting up,” said Maria Rodriguez, one of the planners in the presentation. “In Ciclovía, you can see people walking, running, biking and skating, but also we are working on connecting with partners to bring activities like Zumba and dance classes.”

In addition to the activities, Ciclovía will also have information booths for community groups, music, raffles and a children’s area.

Regular planning meetings have taken place on Tuesdays to help organize the event. The most recent meeting was July 20, with the next meeting set for July 27 from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. via Zoom.

Ciclovía Soledad is planned to take place from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. on that Sunday.
