SALINAS — California Rodeo Association has announced its first-ever Junior Rodeo, scheduled to take place on Sunday, June 9, at the Salinas Sports Complex, 1034 N. Main St., in Salinas.

“This event underscores the Association’s commitment to nurturing the next generation of rodeo stars while honoring the rich heritage and traditions of the American West,” according to the Association.

Young aspiring cowgirls and cowboys are encouraged to participate in this competition, which aims to educate and engage youth in the exciting world of rodeo.

“We look forward to hosting our first Junior Rodeo to help grow the sport and keep western heritage alive and well in both our community and the state,” said Steve Davis, president of the California Rodeo Salinas.

Presented by MYCars.com, Junior Rodeo entries will be taken online through May 31.

Buckles will be awarded to the first-place winners in each event. Check-in will be from 7:30 to 8:30 a.m., with competitions kicking off at 9 a.m. Participants can look forward to a range of events tailored to different age groups, including:

  • 3 years old and under: Stick Horse Race, Boot Race, Goat Tail Untying
  • 4-5 years old:  Stick Horse Race, Boot Race, Goat Tail Untying
  • 8 years old and under:  Calf Riding, Barrel Race, Pole Bending, Goat Tail Untying, Single Stake
  • 9-13 years Girls events: Barrel Race, Pole Bending, Goat Tying, Breakaway Roping, Team Roping
  • 9-13 years Boys events: Steer Riding, Chute Dogging, Goat Tying, Breakaway Roping, Team Roping
  • 14-18 years Girls events: Barrel Race, Pole Bending, Goat Tying, Breakaway Roping, Team Roping 
  • 14-18 years Boys events: Wild Beef Ride, Chute Dogging, Tie Down Roping, Team Roping
  • Family event: Team Roping
