GONZALES — Gonzales Youth Council and the Gonzales Chamber of Commerce are teaming up during the month of November for “No Straw November.”

“The goal of this campaign is to reduce the number of straws that are unnecessarily used,” said Youth Commissioner Fabiola Moreno.

According to Moreno, the Gonzales Youth Council took the project to the Gonzales Chamber of Commerce with the help of Maury Treleven, and the Chamber gave them their full support.

“We have received support from 10 local restaurants and advertisements have already been put up,” said Moreno. “The local restaurants that are participating are going to get advertisement in the Kiosk as well as the city Facebook page.”

“No Straw November” is a challenge from the Junior Ocean Guardians that asks consumers to refuse plastic straws during the month of November. The group also asks that a tally is kept of how many straws were eliminated from potentially ending up in the ocean.

According to the Junior Ocean Guardians, plastic straws are one of the main ocean plastic polluters.

Gonzales restaurants who are supporting “No Straw November” are Luigi’s Restaurant, Lucky Bamboo, Tacos El Jalicience, El Famoso, La Enchilada, Carlito’s Steakhouse, Linda Taqueria, Burger Queen and Del Valle Paleteria Y Neveria. These restaurants are encouraging their patrons to take straws only when they need one and only providing straws upon request.
