SALINAS VALLEY — South Monterey County boys’ and girls’ basketball teams are making a push to earn Central Coast Section playoff spots in the final week of regular season play.

GIRLS’ BASKETBALL

Gonzales High girls will be playing for a share of the Santa Lucia on Wednesday night when they host the Marina Mariners at the Roger Fernando Gym in Gonzales.

The Spartans (10-0 in Santa Lucia) played two games last week, beating the Anzar Hawks, 47-22, and Oakwood, 36-26. Angelina Navarro just missed a triple-double in the Anzar game with 14 points, 22 rebounds and eight assists. Navarro added seven blocked shots and seven steals.

Evelyn Perea contributed with seven points and seven rebounds with six assists and five steals. Jackie Camacho filled her stat sheet with seven points, six rebounds, two assists and three steals.

In the game with Oakwood, Navarro had a game-high 31 rebounds, scored 17 points and finished with 11 steals, five assists and four blocks. Karyna Maturino scored 10 points with 11 rebounds, six assists and nine steals. Camacho, Aliette Reyes and Maryanne Camarena combined for four blocked shots and six steals.

The Greenfield girls had a .500 week with a 44-22 win against Santa Catalina and a 53-44 home loss to St. Francis.

The Bruins had three players score in double figures against the Cougars, with Lesley Santiago scoring 11 points and 10 rebounds and six steals and Jenny Villa scoring 11 points and Aleena Salas adding 10 points.

In the loss to St. Francis, Salas scored a team-high 16 points while Santiago scored 10 points with 15 rebounds and Villa finishing with 10 points.

Greenfield hosted Pajaro Valley on Monday, and completes the season on Thursday at King City.

The Soledad Aztecs are 4-7 in the Gabilan Division after a 66-21 win over Everett Alvarez and a 50-36 road loss to Watsonville.

Justina Botello averaged 18.5 points per game in the two contests and Valeria Segura averaged 12 rebounds per game. Botello averaged 10 rebounds per game and Aliyah Velarde averaged seven rebounds per game. Delylah Ocampo and Segura averaged 12 points per game in last week’s contests.

Soledad will play their final game of the regular season on Thursday at Salinas High.

BOYS’ BASKETBALL

Soledad boys (9-2 in Cypress) were 2-1 for the week, losing 60-54 to first place St. Francis, crushing the Pacific Collegiate Pumas 76-29, and beating King City 54-36.

In the St. Francis game, Pedro Morales scored 19 points and Pablo Morales added 11 points in the home loss to the Sharks. Anikan Tavarez added eight points and grabbed eight rebounds. Anthony Medina had 11 rebounds and Bryan Villegas finished with seven assists.

Against Pacific Collegiate, Pablo Morales had nine three-pointers and scored 42 points. Anikan Tavarez had five points, five rebounds and six assists.

In the King City contest, Pablo Morales led Soledad with 11 points and Tavares just missed double figures with nine points. Medina led the Aztecs with 12 rebounds and Pedro Morales scored nine points and had five assists. Villegas contributed with five assists and four steals.

The Greenfield Bruins (5-6 in Cypress) began last week with a 70-45 win against Gonzales. Chris Morris had 22 points and 12 rebounds and Naythen Hernandez had 21 points, and Johnny Miranda added 12 points.

Last Friday the Bruins were beaten 64-52 by visiting St. Francis. Miranda led Greenfield with 25 points and had 10 rebounds. Freshman Omar Flores scored seven points and added 10 rebounds.

On Saturday in Greenfield, the Bruins defeated the York  Falcons, 88-76. Miranda set a new Greenfield scoring record with 54 points, and Morris had 20 points. Hernandez finished with 10 assists.

Greenfield concludes the season at Stevenson on Thursday at 3:30 p.m.

Gonzales (4-6 in Cypress) fell 80-44 to St. Francis and completed the week with a 50-36 Senior Night win against Pacific Collegiate.

Alejandro Anguiano led Soledad in scoring against St. Francis with 13 points and Ray Blanco scored 10 points. Against visiting Pacific Collegiate, Fernando De Leon led the Spartans in scoring with 16 points.

Gonzales played at King City on Tuesday and hosts North Salinas on Wednesday.
