Basketball | New season begins for South Monterey County girls’ teams

SALINAS VALLEY — Now that the sportsmanship games are out of the way for girls’ basketball teams in South Monterey County, the matchups beginning this past week count toward their 2022-23 season.

Soledad Aztecs

The Lady Aztecs were busy last week entering in the MVC Mission 831 Tournament. In the first matchup, they faced the host team Monte Vista Christian. The Aztecs were able to get their first win of the year, 30-29, moving on to the championship round. In the next round, they faced Santa Clara and came up short, finishing in second place.

Greenfield Bruins

The Lady Bruins, defending Santa Lucia champions, got their season started off with a matchup against Rancho San Juan. The Bruins came out on top, 44-39. Yazmin Avalos led the Lady Bruins with 14 points.

King City Mustangs

The Lady Mustangs started their season hosting Paso Robles. The Mustangs, who will still have to find a way to make up for scoring from a year ago, came up short, 49-32. King City’s Julia Mendez led the team in scoring with 20.

Gonzales Spartans

The Lady Spartans started their season by entering in the MVC Mission 831 Tournament. In the first round, they played Pacific Collegiate. Like last year, the Spartans were able to advance to the next round with a 38-35 win. In the championship game, they came up short to the host team Monte Vista Christian. For the second straight year, the Spartans finished in second.
