GONZALES — Parents, teachers and students of Gonzales moved to the beat for a Zumba fundraiser, aiding the Gonzales PTCA on May 25 at the Fairview Gymnasium.

Leading the Zumbathon was Martha Grimes, who has led Zumba in Gonzales, Soledad and Salinas. This is the second Zumba fundraiser Gonzales Parent Teacher Community Association (PTCA) has had with the first last fall.

“I love it,” Grimes said. “I like to meet a lot of people.”

Grimes said she likes to bring Zumba to low-income families who cannot otherwise afford to take Zumba classes.

The PTCA supports all the teachers and classrooms at Fairview and La Gloria schools. The PTCA recently gave the majority of its teachers $150 to use in their classrooms.

“All the money goes right back to the Gonzales PTCA, and they in turn pass it on to teachers and classrooms for projects and materials that go above the budget,” teacher Marianne Peixoto said.

Among Grimes’ Zumba class participants was Yesenia Pantoja, who was taking part in the class due to her enjoying Zumba and keeping fit.

“I like to dance a lot,” Pantoja said.

Pantoja has a student at Fairview Middle School.

Zumba participant Mary Ponce came to the Zumba fundraiser to support Grimes because she likes her class a lot.

“I work every day, and for me, being able to join the class is so much fun that even though I’m tired or stressed after I do Zumba, I’ll be fine again,” Ponce said. “I love it.”

Ponce will have a student attending La Gloria in the fall as a transitional kindergartener.
