Film festival submissions deadline approaches
KING CITY — Independent filmmakers have until Aug. 10 to submit their work for consideration in the inaugural Pinnacles Film Festival, set for Oct. 10 at King City Cinemas.
Presented by Sol Treasures in partnership with the Arts Council for Monterey County, the festival is seeking films from across California centered on the theme “Stories on the Edge.”
Organizers are accepting submissions in categories including animation, documentary, experimental, feature, music video, short and student films. Films must have a runtime of 60 minutes or less.
Selected films will be featured in curated screenings followed by live question-and-answer sessions with filmmakers. The festival also will include an emcee-hosted program and a filmmaker after-party with live music.

Mini Alebrijes exhibit opens during First Friday Salinas
SALINAS — Arts Council for Monterey County will celebrate the opening of its companion Mini Alebrijes and Nahuales exhibit during First Friday Salinas on Aug. 7 at One Main Street, 1 Main St.
The free event begins at 4:45 p.m. with a performance by La Guelaguetza Salinas, followed by a formal program hosted by the Salinas Valley Chamber of Commerce and an official ribbon-cutting at 5:45 p.m. Visitors can then explore the exhibit during a special evening viewing from 6 to 7:30 p.m., with live music by the Latin Jazz Collective continuing through 8 p.m.
The miniature exhibit accompanies the citywide installation of eight monumental Alebrijes and Nahuales sculptures throughout Salinas. Arts4MC also announced it is sponsoring the 20-foot sculpture, “The Coyote,” at the entrance to the exhibit at One Main Street.
The sculptures are featured on Arts4MC’s Art Tours Monterey County mobile app, allowing visitors to create self-guided tours of the exhibition and other public art throughout the county.
The citywide exhibition opened July 31 at Northridge Mall and will include workshops, educational activities and cultural performances throughout its run. The official closing ceremony is scheduled for First Friday Salinas on Sept. 4 at One Main Street.

LAFCO seeks public member applicants
MONTEREY COUNTY — The Local Agency Formation Commission of Monterey County is seeking applicants for its Regular Public Member seat.
Monterey County residents with an interest in local government operations and organization are encouraged to apply. The appointment will be made by the County, city and special district members of the commission.
LAFCO is an independent countywide agency created by the state Legislature in 1963. The commission oversees city and special district boundaries, establishes spheres of influence, and conducts studies of government services to encourage orderly growth, preserve agricultural and open space lands, discourage urban sprawl and support efficient public services.
The public member seat term will expire in May 2030. Applications are due by 5 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 14.
