Greenfield police to hold DUI checkpoint Friday
GREENFIELD — Greenfield Police Department will conduct a DUI and driver’s license checkpoint on Friday, May 22, from 6 to 10 p.m. at an undisclosed location within city limits.
Checkpoint locations are selected based on data showing incidents of impaired driving-related crashes, according to police. Officials said the primary purpose of the operation is to promote public safety by removing suspected impaired drivers from the road.
Police reminded motorists that impaired driving is not limited to alcohol, noting that some prescription medications and over-the-counter drugs can interfere with driving ability. While medicinal and recreational marijuana are legal in California, driving under the influence of marijuana remains illegal.
Drivers convicted of a first-time DUI can face an average of $13,500 in fines and penalties, along with a suspended license, police said.
Funding for the checkpoint program was provided through a California Office of Traffic Safety STEP Grant.
