SALINAS VALLEY — The high school volleyball season for local teams ended last week, as Gonzales, Greenfield and Soledad played their final divisional games and King City lost its Central Coast Section (CCS) contest.
King City hosted Saratoga in the first round of the CCS playoffs, falling in three games, 25-22, 25-22 and 25-23 on Saturday in the Mustang gym.
“We were excited to have a home playoff game,” said King City head coach Christine Luna. “The scores just meant that if we had a couple less errors, it could have been a different match. It is always an honor to get to the CCS playoffs and our teams never take it for granted. It was a good season overall, and we’re looking forward to next season.”
King City’s Avery Munoz had 14 kills and eight digs, while Hollyn Hearne had six kills and 15 digs. Teammates Xienna Novoa had 15 digs and Stephanie Velasquez had 14 digs.
Gonzales completed the regular season with an 8-6 record in the Mission Division (12-14 overall), placing fourth in divisional standings. Last Monday the Spartans won 3-1 at Watsonville and lost two nights later at home to visiting Alisal, 3-0.
Soledad lost 3-1 in Salinas to Alisal last Monday, beat Watsonville, 3-0, at home the following day and concluded the season with a 3-1 loss to visiting Stevenson on Oct. 29. The Aztecs finished fifth in the Mission Division with a 6-8 record (13-13 overall).
Greenfield finished sixth in the Mission Division with a 3-11 division record (6-18 overall).
On Oct. 27, the Bruins hosted Everett Alvarez and won the contest 3-2. Against the Eagles, Layla Rodriguez led Greenfield with 10 kills and 25 digs. Priscilla Madrigal added six kills and 12 digs, Karina Ayala had five kills and 12 and two service aces, Karina Ayala had five kills and 12 digs, and Arlene Cruz had 22 assists, one kill and 23 digs.
Two nights later the Bruins lost by a 3-0 score to the host Monterey Toreadores.
