SOLEDAD — City of Soledad unveiled its newest public art installation last week celebrating the area’s rich heritage and serving as a tribute to the dedication, courage and service of local first responders.
A ribbon-cutting ceremony was held Sept. 3 to celebrate the vibrant artwork titled “Echoes of Generations,” located on the outside wall of the new Soledad Fire Apparatus Bay at 525 Monterey St.
According to the City, the project was made possible through support from Monterey County Supervisor Chris Lopez, who awarded Soledad a $40,000 grant to help fund the mural.
“Public art is a reflection of who we are as a community; it tells our story, honors our values and brings people together,” Lopez said. “The Soledad Fire Apparatus Bay mural is a perfect example of how creativity and collaboration can transform a space into something meaningful for all who pass by. I am proud our office could support this project and grateful to the City of Soledad for its commitment to investing in art that celebrates and strengthens our community.”
The mural’s design was shaped by extensive community input, weaving together themes of cultural diversity with Soledad’s past, present and future, while honoring the vital role of local first responders within the community.
“Our public safety professionals are the backbone of Soledad,” said Mayor Anna Velazquez. “This mural is a powerful reminder of their courage, sacrifice and daily commitment to keeping our community safe. It is also a symbol of the deep respect and gratitude we hold for those who serve.”
The Arts Council for Monterey County played a key role in the project by providing consultation services and securing the artists — Paul Richmond, Brenda Scettrini Saglio and Briden Cole Schueren — who designed and created the mural.
“The Arts Council is delighted to support Soledad’s new mural, ‘Echoes of Generations,’ a colorful tribute to the resilience, culture and unity of this community,” said Jacquie Atchison, executive director of the Arts Council.
Community members were invited to attend last week’s celebration, during which they could meet the artists and participate in family-friendly activities, including a children’s art project hosted by the Arts Council.
“I am proud that this artwork will inspire future generations and stand as a lasting tribute to the values of service and unity that define Soledad,” added Velazquez.
