GONZALES — Each year the American Legion Auxiliary of Gonzales, Unit 81, hosts an essay contest under the committee Americanism.

The title this year was, “What does Freedom mean to me?”, and teacher Isaura Garcia’s eighth-grade English class at Fairview Middle School submitted around 18 essays.

The top three received awards from the unit, with the first-place winner moving on to the district level. The winners were: Joel Gutierrez, first place; Jacob Dash Tomines, second place; and Celeste Medina Fregosa, third place.
