GONZALES — Members of the Gonzales High track and field team and their parents and coaches gathered last Thursday for the annual awards night and banquet.
This year’s event, held in the school cafeteria, included food from Luigi’s, presentation of school certificates, special team awards and the famous slide show that was put together by head coach Margie Daniels.
The student-athletes received certificates of participation followed by recognition of scholar-athletes with high GPAs. Certificates were from the high school and from the Central Coast Section.
First-time varsity athletes that completed the season were presented with block G’s, while returning athletes received bars and pins for their letterman jackets and sweaters.
The slide show consisted of videos and pictures from the past season with plenty of action from league meets and invitationals and some funny moments on and off the track.
The evening concluded with special team awards to the varsity boys and girls team members.
Varsity boys who received awards were: Joshua Mariscal (Rising Star); Giovanni Ochoa (Most Valuable Performer); Jason Tejeda (Spartan Award); Robert Gutierrez (Most Outstanding Track); Bobby Bonilla (Rookie of the Year); Owen Humphries (Most Improved); Elijah Minor (Outstanding Field); Alen Valdez (Spirit of Sport, Outstanding Hurdler); Abel Villegas (Coaches Award); and Etuati Galvez (Coaches Award).
Varsity girls who received awards were: Katherine Toledo (Outstanding Track Athlete); Jackie Camacho (Rookie of the Year); Jayleen Villasenor (Captains Award); Jayla Gomez (Coaches Award); Lilia Chavarin (Coaches Award); Guadalupe Cervantes (Spartan Spirit); Maria Rivera (Most Improved); and Adrial Lambert (Rising Star).
In addition, Pacific Coast Athletic League awards were given to the JV relay team (Owen Humphries); JV high jump champion Aiden Borongan; and an All-League certificate to Giovanni Ochoa for claiming the varsity 3200 meters league title.
