MONTEREY COUNTY — As the sole source provider of essential senior services in Monterey County, Alliance on Aging believes that volunteerism is the engine that drives change within communities.
The nonprofit also believes it can change the lives of individual volunteers as well.
Studies show that giving to others can help improve both mental and physical health. It can reduce stress and combat depression, while keeping volunteers mentally stimulated, and providing a keen sense of purpose.
Volunteering with the Alliance on Aging can help an individual make new friends, meet new people, expand their comfort zone, and boost their social skills.
To help encourage volunteers and enlighten them about its wide-ranging services, Alliance on Aging will host a special volunteer event on Tuesday, Feb. 21, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Prospective volunteers can sign up online at allianceonaging.org/volunteer, or simply show up to the event at the AOA office, 247 Main St., in Salinas, or from the HUB entrance at 236 Monterey St.
For more than 50 years, the Alliance on Aging has been the place to turn to for older adult programs and services. Its volunteers contribute their time, energy, talent and compassion to a wide spectrum of clients.
The AOA Volunteer Corps currently consists of more than 200 individuals who choose everyday to make a difference in the lives of older adults.
Volunteer positions are currently available for the following programs: HICAP (Health Insurance Counseling and Advocacy Program); Ombudsman; Senior Peer Counseling (English and Spanish speakers needed); Senior Luncheon; Tax Counseling; Spirals Benefit Stores (Pacific Grove and Salinas); and Outreach at oldtown Salinas Farmers Market.
