GREENFIELD — Greenfield girls’ varsity basketball team continues to dominate, extending its winning streak to seven and taking control of the Santa Lucia Division.
At the beginning of the week, the Lady Bruins and the King City Lady Mustangs were set to play to determine who would take over first place in the division.
The Lady Bruins started the Jan. 24 game off, getting the ball inside and taking advantage of their side over King City. The Bruins led 17-12 after the first quarter.
Greenfield’s Jessica Rodriguez created a matchup problem all night for the Lady Mustangs. Rodriguez dominated the paint and finished with a team-high of 12 points and more than 10 rebounds.
The Mustangs were able to keep the game close because of their three-point shooting, but the Bruins still held a 30-26 lead at the half.
In the second half, Greenfield’s defense took over, forcing turnovers and the King City shooters to take difficult shots.
Just like in the first half, the Bruins dominated the inside. Tai Matalau played a big part in scoring 10 points and over 10 rebounds.
The Lady Bruins won the game, 55-35, and moved into first place by themselves.
The rest of the week, Greenfield cruised through their competition, beating Pacific Collegiate 44-11 and Rancho San Juan 53-33.
The Lady Bruins have won each league game by 10 points or more. If they win the remainder of their games, they will take the Santa Lucia Division outright, giving them their first league title in girls basketball ever.
