To the Editor:
This Thanksgiving week should not pass us by without further recognizing the heroics of our Soledad Police Chief Damon Wasson.
In that dreadful incident from last week, where an innocent man lost his life, Chief Wasson made the split decision to put his own life in danger and stop the offender. He drove his police car directly and head-on into the runaway vehicle to stop further chaos from occurring in his community; an act of heroism that certainly stopped further deaths and injuries, though he certainly sustained injuries himself.
Police departments can sometimes be criticized by the very people they serve. In this instance, it was heart-warming that so many community members publicly recognized the outstanding valor of their Chief and commended him appropriately, as well as his many officers — and officers from other jurisdictions — who assisted in putting a stop to this horrible incident.
As you sit down to your Thanksgiving meal this Thursday, take time to remember the Soledad Police Chief and all of law enforcement who put their lives on the line every day to keep their communities safe. Last week was a huge reminder of the dangers of the job and the special qualities it takes to work in law enforcement.
Thank you, Chief, for selflessly doing what needed to be done that day. The key to our City is yours to keep. May all our communities be peaceful and safe this holiday season.
Lucy Jensen
Soledad
