GONZALES — New parklets are being built by Gonzales Public Works along Fourth Street to increase outdoor business space for local restaurants.
These small areas are constructed on spaces that were once parking spots along the roadside, but will now serve as areas for additional tables and chairs.
“We approached the three restaurants (El Rinconcito, El Antojito and Luigi’s) and told them the city would install the wood platforms in the parking spaces to provide them with additional outdoor seating,” said Patrick Dobbins, the city’s Public Works director.
The program recently kicked off at the end of September and is expected to be finished soon, with the businesses maintaining the new parklets in front of the initial locations.
The pilot program aims to convert two parking stalls into seating space in order to allow local restaurants the ability to maintain social distancing while also serving more customers.
“We’ll approach additional businesses after completing these first three parklets,” Dobbins said. Those additional restaurant locations will be approached within the next month, and no permits are needed to participate.
