GONZALES — Gonzales Adult School is helping residents gain CPR skills and first aid training to take into the work force.

The course is taught by Karla Campos, an adult education instructor.

CPR and first aid training are some of the certifications the adult school offers along with forklift operation and computer certification. The school is looking for certifications that students and the community can use for employment and better their lives.

“There’s a need not only inside the district,” said Ana Mendoza, lead adult education instructor. “There’s a quote ‘Save a Life, Take a CPR Class’ because we feel that it’s really important not only for our own families, but also when they’re out.”

Mendoza said returning to school can be difficult, especially for adults who have families and work.

“We just want to make sure that our students have the opportunity when they come to class to also get a certification,” she said.

The course is eight hours long, with the time split between CPR and first aid. Each certification class can host 10 students.

The first class, held in January at the Gonzales Adult School, was in Spanish. Two other classes were held in Greenfield on Feb. 7 and 8, and an English speaking class began yesterday, with the final class taking place this evening.

“Each student who takes the course has to have a certain amount of time on the mannequin and we just want to guarantee that,” Mendoza said. “Classes can’t be smaller than five.”

Because the adult school has different sites in Gonzales and Greenfield, the staff try to hold classes twice a month. The price for the certification also has been reduced because the school received additional federal funding.
